Business oriented blog presenting street painting art (aka chalk, pavement, sidewalk, etc.) and its uses in advertising, marketing, and industry worldwide.
Art for After Hours is enjoying a busy year bringing 3D chalk art to our clients and their attendees across the US and internationally. This is my latest 3D chalk art piece completed May 12th at the Artisphere International Arts Festival in Greenville SC. In the distance, you can see a promotional piece created in chalk by Artist Shawn McCann. Here's our story...
Art for After Hours was asked to create two chalk art pieces for the event, one the 3D chalk piece and the second being the 2013 promotional piece originally designed by international artist Amos Amit.
I designed my piece to indicate the walkway down to the riverwalk by the Reedy River in the artistic imagery of Amos Amit as well as a homage to previous chalk art created by Art for After Hours in years past.
Walking down the stairs and into the image an imaginary passerby could recall works such as 'Waterfall' , a piece that I did in 2010 (below)...
Or some of the chalk art works by Shawn McCann (below):
It has been a nice walk down memory lane for Art for After Hours... Now on to Shawn's current piece from the 2013 event.
Artist Shawn McCann with his completed reproduction of 'Night and Day', (originally created by Amos Amit) for Art for After Hours at the 2013 Artisphere International Arts Festival.
It was a great weekend for us, the weather was generally nice, and despite a bit of rain, the art turned out great and we were interviewed by the local NBC and Fox affiliates, bringing even more viewers to see us creating and interacting with our art.
Special thanks to Artisphere for having Art for After Hours come to bring our chalk art, and to the viewers in Greenville who come to see us and the artists we bring each year.

Anthony Cappetto, An internationally recognized 3D 4D Chalk Artist, is the President and Founder of Art for After Hours, a company he founded in 2001 to bring 3D illusionary street art and pristine reproductions to corporate, advertising, public relations, and exhibition clients in the USA and internationally. A pioneer in blending 3D illusionary art with emerging technologies such as augmented reality (AR) and virtual spaces, Cappetto has brought his 3D 4D chalk art to locations in Europe, Mexico, India, The Middle East, Asia, and South America. He has been asked to give talks and workshops to students and faculty in Uruguay and festivals in the US about 3D and 4D illusion inspiring new generations of street painting artists. www.artforafterhours.com
Although I as an artist am a strong supporter of using emerging technologies such as AR or animation in my 3D chalk art, I have heard in some circles that there may be a 'disconnect' in why one (client) would wish to employ a new item into what has become an attractive, traffic generating item in successful client programs in the US and internationally.
Some are concerned about how the technology may be overpowering to the traditional art, some what they feel may be the costs and complexity involved in realizing the project on tight deadlines, the list I'm sure may be a long one to the ones sourcing out potential vehicles for expressing their message to their viewers and market segments. But there was a time in the early part of the last decade that these very same concerning arose with 3D chalk art I know, because as an artist and as the founder of a nascent company - Wendy and I were there...
And in that time the early to mid 00's, prospects (who ultimately became happy clients), we were asked about how people would view this art. "... so our viewers will need a camera to see the art? And they can't see it with their naked eyes? Why does the art look different when drawn onsite as opposed to the sketch? The list went on a bit more also. What I ultimately said to them was "...Yes, you (at that time) viewed the art through a digital camera, yes the nature of how the 3D chalk art is designed makes it so you need a lens to properly view the 3D illusion, and yes the art look different on the ground then on the sketch we showed them because of the illusionary methods the artist needs to use so it is illusionary in the camera." Then of course the questions concerning siting, coordination, logistics, etc.
Which brings us to today with the questions about using AR - Do we have to see it through a lens? How does it work? How much longer does it take to coordinate with the 3D chalk art, Will it look 'gimmicky'? My answers are yes as the 3D chalk art is still viewed through a lens and that to see the AR or animation you will access it through an app developed for the project made available to the client or to the public. As for 'gimmicky', that is not our goal. Our goal is to 'blend' the traditional 3D chalk art form with the latest in emerging technologies which at this time are AR, animation, projection, and concepts that I as an artist welcome as part of projects that are attractive, conceptual, and above all satisfy my clients desires for the most advanced, reaching, and viable projects for advertising, branding, multi city tours, in the US and internationally. No gimmicks - just straightforward planning, imagination, and team coordination for project success. The greater details of course are available with a one on one discussion by contacting me, Anthony Cappetto at Art for After Hours 3D/AR Chalk Art.
If you are seeking a 3D chalk art company that is experienced over ten years, traveled worldwide, and can speak to corporate and artist teams (that we provide from our pool of the best chalk artists* in the US) alike in their cultures to achieve the program goal, again I am available to discuss your specific programs and goals.
