Hello to our readers from the Artisphere International Arts Festival in Greenville SC.

Art for After Hours was happy to come back down to this fun festival celebrating art in early May to re create 2D street paintings, a pleasant diversion from our 3D illusionary artworks.

 

This year, Shawn McCann and I both re-created art works from artist Daryl Thetford who uses collage in his works.

It was a fun time for all of us at Artisphere this year, despite and unexpected rain day but our spirits were not deterred.  Looking forward to returning again in 2013!

Street Art Murals with AR: Going Vertical - and on the ground too...

As many of our readers know, Art for After Hours is blending the traditional chalk art form with the emerging technologies of animated augmented reality (AR). We are finding that our recent projects using AR with the chalk art are generating large amounts of attention and interest, we like this of course...

 

As our recent project in Mumbai showed us was that blending multiple aspects of Art for After Hours art work - 3D chalk art, wall mural art, and AR can be very successful in crowd attention, extendable to branding, launches, and campaigns.

The interaction here is a start for us and Art for After Hours sees a growing trend in bringing technologies such as AR into our traditional 3D chalk and indoor/outdoor mural works.  Projects can be developed in ways to intensify the illusionary experience, present client goals in a dynamic, interactive way not done anywhere esle at this point in time.

Hundreds of students from IIT Bombay not only viewed the AR through our iPad setup but posed nonstop for three days to be part of the animated AR experience.

These pictures are just a few of the hundreds taken of different students during the festival,  the takeaways possible in events and launches are very clear.

Happy New Year from Art for After Hours!

Last year was an exciting year for us to introduce the use of animated augmented reality (AR) into our 3D chalk art events.  Over the New Year, I was invited to Mumbai, India bringing along Art for After Hours wall mural and 3D chalk artist Shawn McCann to present the vision of 'blending' traditional art and emerging technologies to the Techfest 2012 event at IIT Bombay in Mumbai, India.

The project was a lot of fun for us and a great stage to share my ideas of blending art and technology together for a three day attendance of over 80,000 students and attendees.

Here we have Shawn posing with a portion of the completed main wall for the Techfest event in which he designed and supervised a team of onsite student assistants to produce outdoor street art wall murals in a five day period.  The main wall (detail, above) measured 27 meters long by 4.5 meters high, while the secondary wall (below) measured 6.25 meters by 4.5 meters high.

While Shawn was working on the wall murals, I (Anthony Cappetto) designed and produced the first 3D chalk art/ animated AR project in India (below) and the second 3D chalk art/ animated AR project anywhere in the world up to this point.  Iam  standing up the highest and positioned just left of center.

 The IIT students and I were interacting with the AR model of the IIT robot mascot 'chasing' the robot over the 'Cityscape' 3D chalk art mural which took approximately 30 hours to complete in advance of the event start.

This being our second project blending the 3D chalk and AR, Art for After Hours is finding that the interest by the public in the emerging technology is very high.  We had a near continuous stream of several hundred IIT students  lined up to interact with our AR models over the three day festival.  Here are a few examples from the event:

Augmented Reality Comes to 3D Chalk Art Events by Art for After Hours Artist Anthony Cappetto

Art for After Hours is very happy to discuss our successful and exciting 3D chalk art project with the very first use of animated Augmented Reality (AR) which was powered by our friends at Daqri.

We created a large scale 3D street painting titled ' Visions of Cambodia' measuring 30 by 50 feet in size drawn over six days by the team of Anthony Cappetto ( lead artist and designer), Shawn McCann, and Wendy Stum.

The real excitement for us was the development of the AR with Daqri guidance for blending the technology, the human interaction, and the traditional work of Madonnari street painting or pavement art. We displayed the AR effects through a dedicated app on our iPad to share with thousands of viewers at the Sarasota Chalk Festival this weekend, November 4th - 6th.

The app showed animated butterflies and birds inspired by Art for After Hours chalk drawn models to make our chalk art 'come alive' to the delight of the huge number of attendees. Our goal is to offer a new generation of 3D/AR chalk art projects for our corporate clients and exhibition clients alike.

This is a close up through our iPad of the unique Ar effects of a hummingbird and butterflies hovering in the art and around my hands through a specialized app designed by Daqri for us for use in the Art for After Hours 3D chalk art.  We see this as the beginning of a new level of illusion in art and technology and wish to share the vision with the most visionary project opportunities available.

The AR effects as seen through our iPad for public viewing on a project.  If you look closely, you can see the butterflies and hummingbird in motion in the center of the piece. Anthony Cappetto/Art for After Hours: A conversation about performance, blending and sharing experiences with 3D chalk art with Augmented Reality (AR)

This seems to be the time that I am seeing augmented reality reaching the world at least at the financial news level, and I expect the mainstream to follow suit soon.

As a 3D street painting artist who has been exploring the possibilities of blending emerging technology and social media since 2007, this is great to hear.

3D Pavement Art in Duluth, GA by Anthony Cappetto of Art for After Hours - May 2011

Recently, I (Anthony Cappetto)was able to share my 3D pavement art with the visitors to the Barefoot in the Park Arts Festival in Duluth, GA, from May 6th through May 8th, 2011.

This large scale 3D street painting measured approximately 16' by 30' in size and took me about 30 hours to complete.

The titled artwork 'Barefoot in the Park' shows beautiful scenery below with a majestic waterfall on the left side of the piece, a rock wall in the distance that I am upon, and a colorful cliff wall at the right.

I enjoy what I am able to do and to share my passion for 3D street painting (pavement) art with everyone.

'Think Growth' New 3D street painting from Shawn McCann and Art for After Hours in Scottsdale, AZ, May 2011

On May 2nd and 3rd, Art for After Hours went out to sunny Scottsdale, AZ to 'think growth' for a conference with one of our clients.

Using a bit of a surrealist play with a business theme, 3D street painting artist Shawn McCann worked with the client to generate a conceptual mix of fine art and fun street painting which wowed the attendees from start to finish.

 

I was onsite to interact with the conference attendees to present the history of our art form and to show everyone how to view the art using their devices such as smartphones, tablets, and cameras.

Michael Macaulay and I were interviewed on 'Mass Appeal', a local program at the NBC affiliate WWLP in Springfield, MA.  We were happy to share our excitement about our recent Art for After Hours 3D street painting, an interpretation of the Currier & Ives classic lithograph 'Through to the Pacific' (1870) which we created for the attendees of the Original Western Massachusetts Home and Garden Show, March 24th through March 27th, 2011.

At a size of 15 feet deep by 20 feet wide, our finished 3D street painting art took 3-1/2 days for us to do or about 70 hours worth of work between us.  Notice how the train appears to levitate outside the finished frame and sill on its path to the Pacific.

I am letting our readers here at the Business of Street Painting Art  know about an upcoming 3D street painting event that will be featuring 3D street painting artists Michael Macaulay and I (Anthony Cappetto) at the Original Western Mass Home and Garden Show in Springfield, MA from March 24th through March 27th, 2011.

Mike and I will be doing our interpretation of the famous 'Through to the Pacific' , a hand-colored lithograph by Currier & Ives that is currently on display in "The Legacy of Currier & Ives: Shaping the American Spirit" at the Michele & Donald D'Amour Museum of Fine Arts, part of the Springfield Museums from February 1st through May 1st, 2011.

Beginning in 1835, Currier & Ives produced prints which celbrated the American experience, and Mike and I are pleaed and honored to be able to bring the detail and attention of Art for After Hours to an important piece of American history.

Growing tradeshow attendee engagement through 3D street painting (chalk) art: Michael Macaulay at the Commodity Classic at the Tampa Convention Center, March 2-4, 2011

Hang on Mike!  That is, 3D street painting (Chalk)artist Michael Macaulay bringing his engaging, interactive art form to the Commodity Classic tradeshow at the Tampa Convention Center from March 2nd through March 4th, 2011.

This Art for After Hours project celebrates the announcement on the new 'Enlist' weed control system for the agricultural community, which was presented with a prominent corn stalk growing from the rich argricultural landscape of the United States.

 

Mike is seen hanging on as 'tightly' as possible from the tassels of the chalk drawn cornstalk, eliciting interest and attention to the message via attractively designed and drawn art.

What many attendees will not readily be aware of is the importance of the artists control of the foreshortened and extended drawing methods required to  allow the 3D street painting to have the successful illusionary effects seen when photographed or as video using a camera lens, making the images seen online and in social media.  Michael Macaulay is pictured chalking the corn stalk early on in the street painting process in Tampa.
