With a new year underway, we look back at the 2017 3D and 4D pieces by internationally recognized artist Anthony Cappetto created around the US and around the world.
The art was fun to design, to create, and we look forward to more 3D art for our clients, returning and new.
New York Build: Javits Center, NYC
Inspired by the iconic 'Lunch Atop a Skyscraper', we created the steel beam hovering over Manhattan at a Building Tradeshow.
'Collapsing Ramp' Garden Grove, CA: A 3D chalk art piece tying in augmented reality (4D) seen through an onsite monitor. We used digital models of robots and fluttering flags of our client to bring human interaction (me on bicycle), the 3D hand drawn chalk art, and the augmented reality animation.
Sunflowers and dragonflies in Battery Park, NYC: A street art installation for an event for Battery Park City Parks in June.
'Freedom' Baltimore, MD: A social and political statement made to address the current atmosphere in the US with the concept of butterflies escaping oppression in any of its forms in September.
'Betta Fish Kite' Crewe, England, United Kingdom: Expressing the beauty and conceptuality of a fish kite hovering over the countryside at a festival in the UK last August.
'A Puzzling Reality' Tizarte Event in Antwerp, Belgium: A 3D street art piece using a purposely fading motif of a puzzle fading away to 'reality' and objects such as the sunflowers fading from higher resolution to simpler resolution. Our dragonflies were designed consistently at the same level across the piece to overlay/tie in the fadeaway concept.
' Refugee: Here but Not Here...': A serious piece address the issue of refugee children throughout the world, although we focused on Syria, South Sudan, and Myanmar. The child in an atmosphere of desolation enjoys a respite blowing bubbles (given to her by an aid worker) evanescent, temporal just as we feel for the child's plight but move on quickly - Here but Not Here...
LIC Beer Festival, Long Island City NYC: A sunny Fall day brought us to create this entertaining design with pumpkins, pretzels, and of course - beer!
This was a fun year with the art experimenting with tying in animated augmented reality, conceptual ideas, sociopolitical messages, and interacting with our public in the US and abroad.
A special thanks to Wendy Stum who assisted and collaborated with me on some of the pieces especially 'Freedom' and ' Refugee: Here but Not Here...'.

Late Sunday afternoon in Long Island City with the Manhattan skyline in the distance. It was great to be able to do these 3D street art pieces in different places with fun, interesting people, creative artists from different parts of the world. Most exciting projects await!

Although I as an artist am a strong supporter of using emerging technologies such as AR or animation in my 3D chalk art, I have heard in some circles that there may be a 'disconnect' in why one (client) would wish to employ a new item into what has become an attractive, traffic generating item in successful client programs in the US and internationally.
Some are concerned about how the technology may be overpowering to the traditional art, some what they feel may be the costs and complexity involved in realizing the project on tight deadlines, the list I'm sure may be a long one to the ones sourcing out potential vehicles for expressing their message to their viewers and market segments. But there was a time in the early part of the last decade that these very same concerning arose with 3D chalk art I know, because as an artist and as the founder of a nascent company - Wendy and I were there...
And in that time the early to mid 00's, prospects (who ultimately became happy clients), we were asked about how people would view this art. "... so our viewers will need a camera to see the art? And they can't see it with their naked eyes? Why does the art look different when drawn onsite as opposed to the sketch? The list went on a bit more also. What I ultimately said to them was "...Yes, you (at that time) viewed the art through a digital camera, yes the nature of how the 3D chalk art is designed makes it so you need a lens to properly view the 3D illusion, and yes the art look different on the ground then on the sketch we showed them because of the illusionary methods the artist needs to use so it is illusionary in the camera." Then of course the questions concerning siting, coordination, logistics, etc.
Which brings us to today with the questions about using AR - Do we have to see it through a lens? How does it work? How much longer does it take to coordinate with the 3D chalk art, Will it look 'gimmicky'? My answers are yes as the 3D chalk art is still viewed through a lens and that to see the AR or animation you will access it through an app developed for the project made available to the client or to the public. As for 'gimmicky', that is not our goal. Our goal is to 'blend' the traditional 3D chalk art form with the latest in emerging technologies which at this time are AR, animation, projection, and concepts that I as an artist welcome as part of projects that are attractive, conceptual, and above all satisfy my clients desires for the most advanced, reaching, and viable projects for advertising, branding, multi city tours, in the US and internationally. No gimmicks - just straightforward planning, imagination, and team coordination for project success. The greater details of course are available with a one on one discussion by contacting me, Anthony Cappetto at Art for After Hours 3D/AR Chalk Art.
If you are seeking a 3D chalk art company that is experienced over ten years, traveled worldwide, and can speak to corporate and artist teams (that we provide from our pool of the best chalk artists* in the US) alike in their cultures to achieve the program goal, again I am available to discuss your specific programs and goals.

As 2012 comes to a close, I am looking back to a uniquely successful year with Art for After Hours with 3D chalk art work mingling with animated augmented reality and use of figurative animation as a dynamic in bringing traditional chalk art and emerging technologies together for the entertainment of millions, yes millions of viewers worldwide.
I speak of the numbers above of course as an extention to the thousands viewing our art live onsite, thanks to social media worldwide whether, Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, or their counterparts in the Pacific Rim or other regional locations.
Here I am (top center, wearing tan shirt) with my new friends in Montevideo, Uruguay as a guest of the US Embassy there in September 2012. This is the same background used for the application of figurative animation (courtesy Mixamo)that could have been done with our live group... (below):
The beauty of mingling or blending physical and virtual activities in projects comes from the creation of the art itself from traditional and emerging sources (chalk art, animation designs, AR) and through connecting to physical and virtual audiences making your message known with more scalability than ever before in programs.
Earlier in the year, I was onsite at an event in Mumbai, India at IIT Bombay in which I mingled animated AR in the formof the IIT robot mascot for thousands of university students over the course of the event, (below):
Here I was (Fourth from left), with a group of IIT Bombay students at the Techfest 2012 in which we 'chased' the IIT Bombay robot mascot (flying away in blue, courtesy of Daqri). The ways to present the mingling of the art/technology are nacsent and the the expansion and sophistication of applying AR and animation are just beginning. Art for After Hours is working with these vendors and always seeking to develop relationships with emerging technology companies, start-ups and established who are seriously interested in seeing how far mingling 3D chalk art in hybrid events and concepts can go.
Indeed, thousand of students came through the exhibition area taking pictures and viewing the AR effect through my setup in front of the physical artwork.
And yes, at one point, the art was bright...
In terms of larger more sophisticated projects, Art for After Hours offers solutions and planning to match the needs of programs, ranging from multiple locations, artwork needs, and logistics.
Take a look at our first foray into 3D chalk art and animated AR(November 2011),and a recent blog interview with Mixamo from November 2012...

Hi Everyone, our new work continues with a brief, fun weekend I had creating a haunting 3D chalk art piece for the Friends and family day at SUNY Oswego over the weekend of October 19th-20th.
Very creepy, but a fun project!
